For the past 11 months, Ethiopian army and their allies have been battling forces from Tigray’s northern area. In July, Tigrayan forces advanced into the Amhara area, where government soldiers were fighting alongside them.

“There is a big build-up of forces on all fronts… we are not sure which front they are actually beginning an offensive on,” Getachew Reda, a spokesman for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), told Reuters by phone. “Artillery is present, as well as drones.”

Multiple airstrikes began on Thursday and intensified on Friday, he said, in three areas: near the towns of Wurgessa and Wegel Tena in the east, and near the towns of Wurgessa and Wegel Tena in the west, he said.
