Dr. Eyob Tekalign, State Minister of Finance, met with Anwar Soussa, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia PLC.
They discussed the Global Partnership for Ethiopia’s project’s progress and the next steps in its implementation.
The two discussed the importance of digitization and a competitive and open telecoms sector for the country’s future.
Dr. Eyob stated during the conversation that Ethiopia has opened its market to private-sector competition and international investment, which is expected to improve service quality and provide consumers with more options.
These measures, he added, will create the groundwork for Ethiopia’s future digital development.
The entry of Safaricom Ethiopia PLC as Ethiopia’s second mobile phone operator is expected to encourage substantial investment in the telecommunications sector, as well as increased market competition, resulting in better service quality, coverage, and innovation.
Thousands of direct and indirect jobs are likely to be created as companies arise to provide services to the industry and a new technology ecosystem forms.
