ADDIS ABABA(ENA) is a city in Ethiopia. Sileshi Bekele, Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy, has appealed to the Ethiopian Diaspora for assistance in completing the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The Ethiopian embassy in Canada organized a webinar discussion titled “Updates on GERD and Information Session on GERD Bond Purchase” in partnership with the Alliance for GERD in Canada.
During the discussion, Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy Sileshi Bekele gave presentations on the current status of the GERD construction and what the Ethiopian Diaspora can expect to contribute to the project.
The minister urged the Ethiopian diaspora in Canada to band together and support the completion of the country’s flagship initiative.
He advised the Diaspora to think of themselves as ambassadors to their homeland, proclaiming Ethiopia’s right to an equal and reasonable use of the Nile River basin.
Lemma Wakeyo, Diaspora Branch Manager at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, outlined the different modalities for purchasing the GERD bonds.
Though Ethiopian Ambassador to Canada Nassise Chali emphasized how the GERD will help everyone and stressed the importance of supporting the project through advocacy, funding, and other means.
